Two different references in the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona range were the best and worst performers on the Bloomberg Subdial Index of pre-owned watch prices in October.
Rolex’s Daytona ref. 116509 was the top performer for the month, up 6.1% to $34,205.
The reference comes in 18ct white gold and its most popular iteration, with a bright blue dial, was discontinued by Rolex this year.
The Bloomberg Subdial Index tracks the market price for 50 references and its worst performer in October was another Daytona, the reference 116519, which saw its average price fall by 6.1% in October, alone, and by over 17% in the past year to $28,703.
Also made in white gold, the 116519 comes with a range of different dial options and a choice of leather or Oysterflex (rubber) strap.
Overall, the Index was flat in October, but Subdial notes that it is seeing pressure in the market that could lead to a further downward drift in prices as dealers cut prices in pursuit of sales.
Subdial also says it has seen a 5% increase in supply of watches on the secondary market since August, which has the potential to weaken prices further.
There has also been an uptick in price uncertainty, according to Subdial, with a particularly broad spread of prices being offered for the same models.
“What we are seeing is dealers dropping prices to chase sales going into the holiday season,” Subdial reports.
