With its unique monogram, style, and designs, French luxury Maison Louis Vuitton continues to be one of the most quintessentially French labels today. As a fashion icon, it comes as no surprise when they create an intriguing collection of bringing the French experience to life through the new Fall-Winter 2023 collection.
Presented in a ballroom of the Musée d’Orsay, the collection was, as the house’s creative director Nicolas Ghesquière would put it, “compelling, wild, and free-associating.”
Exploring the sartorial codes of French style, the Fall-Winter 2023 collection is an enigmatic notion of Parisian chic. It showcases the art of illusion, blurring the distinction between perception and reality. To further introduce the reimagined French signature, the collection’s bag offerings call to the house’s past as a reference point.
Alma BB Malletage Leather
The House’s Creative Director, Nicolas Ghesquière, brings the crisscrossing pattern, first featured on the padded interior of Louis Vuitton trunks, to the Alma BB. This new edition of the bag features a distinct characteristic: the malletage pattern, an ode to Maison’s craftsmanship and rich history of travel. The malletage that pads the bag is a creative process that requires more than 20 different steps, including the utmost meticulousness on the patina to ensure a satin or toasted finish and to perfect the color’s subtle gradations.
Ghesquière constructs the iconic Alma BB handbag in padded lambskin, embellished with a shaded effect. Applied by hand, the toasted aspect brings a modern elegance to the bag’s Art Deco-inspired shape. It also boasts crafted details such as a golden padlock, twin rolled-leather top handles, and a leather key bell. Equipped with a removable strap, it’s ideal for cross-body wear.
GO-14
The GO-14 is an initiatory bag, one of Nicolas Ghesquière’s first designs, and a feat of skill and the epitome of thriving heritage. It first appeared on the runway for the debut of the Women’s Artistic Director at Louis Vuitton and is re-emerging in 2023 in full spirit with a unique characteristic of the malletage. Bringing in the spirit of historical trunk-making, the ever-evolving malletage is a contemporary classic.
Fashioned from soft, luxurious lambskin, the GO-14 MM bag features the signature quilted pattern designed for the Maison’s historic trunks. Accented with a gleaming golden LV Twist lock, this versatile model can be carried by the top handle or worn on its sliding chain. Alternately, the top handle can also be converted into a leather pad on the chain for a comfortable shoulder or crossbody carry.
Pico GO-14
The GO-14 fuses Louis Vuitton’s brand heritage with modern-day appeal, offering a unique combination of classic and contemporary. With the LV Twist closure and the bag’s quilting, this fusion ties back to the Maison’s history in trunk-making. The crisscrossing pattern of the GO-14 mimics the interior of Louis Vuitton trunks, bringing a tactile, padded technique known as the malletage.
The Pico GO-14 lambskin has a sprayed effect, giving it a satiny allure. Signed with an LV Twist lock, it has a golden chain that adjusts for shoulder and cross-body wear—lined with cowhide leather, the inside features a back flat pocket.
Petite Malle Capitale
Nicolas Ghesquière brings a retro vibe to the Petite Malle Capitale handbag with a new top handle, making it even more versatile. Like its predecessor, the revisited shape is fashioned from monogram canvas, with black trim and a gold-color S-lock, decorative studs and rivets. The removable braided chain brings a feminine touch to this suitcase-inspired city bag.
Petite Malle Plaque De Rue
Nicolas Ghesquière puts Paris in the spotlight with this Petite Malle bag reworked with a pediment to imitate a Parisian street sign. The Louis Vuitton Paris signature appears in large white letters on a blue background inside a green frame punctuated with gold rivets. This model has a removable gold chain and an adjustable shoulder strap.
Coussin PM
This Coussin PM bag in soft green and blue monogram lambskin is inspired by Parisian street signs. Repeated on the removable shoulder strap, this color is also present in the chain which includes green resin links. The interior is composed of two compartments separated by an interior zippered pocket.
While this collection celebrates France and its people’s trailblazing styles, Ghesquière shared that “French style belongs to everyone.”
